“It’s the distinction between the formal job market and the informal job market.

The informal job market comprises all jobs that are not filled through someone responding to a job advertisement. Usually, these are jobs that are filled throughrelationships. Either there is a position at the firm that needs to be filled, and an employee at the firm knows someone who’s qualified. Or, the firm wants to bring a specific person they know to join the team, and they create a position for that person out of thin air.

“If you do some Googling on the informal job market, you’ll learn something shocking: according to various estimates (on CNN, CBS, MSNBC, and NPR) somewhere around 80% of jobs get filled informally. In other words, only 20% of jobs get filled through people responding to job ads (the primary method of job seeking most people do)”

Sean and I helped out at Valley 4th this year. I was able to help plan the event and Sean was so great all day! He even got soaked shortly before he left due to a thunderstorm that lasted an hour. He and some friends tried to save a tent from the winds, but the draft through the alley was just too strong. If I get pictures (we were too busy to take any) I will post them!

Couch to 5K:

This is a running program that we’re doing together. We are going to try to finish it. You alternate running and walking until you can running an entire 5K. Even if we don’t finish the entire program, we are getting out there 3 days a week and working out and we’re outside! My hope it that my lung capacity increases, getting a little more fit, and a little sun is great.

We went to see Anthony Bourdain in Raleigh, NC this past weekend (11/13/10). He spoke for 2 hours and mostly told stories. But we had VIP tickets and got a book signed for Sean and one for our friend Chris. And as you can see, we also got a picture with him!!
